What this tool counts
Type or paste text and see your word count update instantly, along with character counts (with and without spaces), sentence count, paragraph count, and an estimated reading time — all updated live as you type, with no button to press.
A real, worked example
For the sample text "This is well-known. It has two real sentences." followed by a blank line and "Second paragraph here.", this tool reports 11 words, 70 characters with spaces, 59 without spaces, 3 sentences, and 2 paragraphs.
How words are counted
A word is any run of non-space characters. This means a hyphenated compound like "well-known" counts as one word, matching how people naturally think of it, rather than splitting on the hyphen to count it as two.
How characters are counted
Characters are counted as actual Unicode symbols, not raw storage units — an emoji or an accented letter counts as one character, the way a person reading the text would count it, not as two or more.
Sentences and paragraphs are estimates
Sentence counting looks for periods, question marks, and exclamation points followed by a space or the end of the text, while specifically avoiding the common false positive of a decimal point between digits (like "3.14") being mistaken for a sentence ending. It's a useful approximation, not a linguistically exact count — unusual abbreviations can occasionally confuse it. Paragraph counting is more straightforward: it counts blocks of text separated by a blank line.
Reading time
The reading-time estimate is deliberately approximate — shown as "~2 min read" rather than a falsely precise figure like "2.2 min read" — based on a typical adult reading speed.
