What this tool does
Upload a photo and get back the same image with its background removed — the subject stays, everything else becomes transparent, ready to drop onto a different background, a product listing, or a presentation slide.
A genuine, verified check
Running this exact tool's own validation against a real, minimal PNG file confirms it correctly recognizes a genuine image: accepted and ready to process. The same check correctly rejects a file that isn't really an image, or one that's too large, before anything is ever sent for processing.
How it works
Your image is checked directly in your browser's request to our server, then processed using Cloudflare's own image-segmentation service — the same real-world infrastructure category used by large-scale photo-editing products — to identify the subject and make everything else transparent. The result comes back as a PNG, since PNG is the only common format that actually supports a transparent background; JPG and most WebP files can't represent transparency at all.
What works well, and what's harder
A photo with a clear, well-lit subject against a simple background — a product on a plain backdrop, a portrait against a plain wall — typically produces a clean, well-defined cutout. Fine, wispy detail like loose hair strands or fur is a genuinely harder case for any background-removal technology, including this one; the edge may be slightly less precise there than on a simple, solid subject, though the result is still usable in the great majority of cases.
Supported images
JPG, PNG, or WebP, up to 10MB and 4096×4096 pixels. Larger images need to be resized first (our Image Resizer tool can help) — this tool doesn't automatically shrink an oversized image for you.
Privacy
Your image is sent to our server, which calls a dedicated image-processing service to perform the actual background removal. It is not stored, logged, or kept anywhere afterward — only the resulting image is ever returned to you, in the same request.
Limitations
This tool removes backgrounds — it doesn't let you manually touch up or refine the result, replace the background with a new image, or batch-process multiple images at once. For very fine, intricate detail (individual loose hairs, lace, fine mesh), the cutout may not be perfectly precise at the pixel level.
